The Keweenaw Star Excursion is no longer in operation. This page is dedicated to the memory of the most fantastic lighthouse tour around the Keweenaw Penninsula. It once offered tourists and locals views of the lighthouses that cannot be experienced from land. This boat routinely would head out on the mighty Lake Superior and make the journey around the Keweenaw. The page showcases what a passenger would experience from "shove-off" in Houghton to the final lighthouse at North Entry.
Boarding the Keweenaw Star in Houghton, MI., your first gaze is upon the majestic Portage Canal Lift Bridge as several boats pass underneath. Take in the valley where two towns cozy up and view Michigan Tech University,Ripley Ski Hill, and old mining factories. Traveling eastward on the Portage Canal, passing by Torch Bay and Chassell Bay, you will encounter several boaters along the way fishing off Bootjack. As you enter into the South Canal, the immense open vastness of the bay gives way to the tiny confines of the canal. Homes dot along the western shore, and some islands on the eastern side just around the next bend is the first lighthouse.
