Highlight for Album: Heikinpaiva Mid-Winter Festival - Mitten Project
Heikinpaiva Mid-Winter Festival - Mitten Project
In 1999, the Finnish Theme Committee of the City of Hancock created a new Finnish-American celebration - Heikinpäivä. The celebration’s themes are taken from Finnish folk saying associated with the name day for Heikki (Henrik’s day, 19 January). In January 2006 Arist Mary Wright culminated a large-scale art project in time for the annual Heikinpäivä celebration in Hancock. “Mittens” is the latest addition to Heikinpäivä, which has grown into a week-long celebration of Finnish culture. Wright’s mittens, which are several feet tall and wide were unveiled during the Heikinpäivä parade, which is the “kickoff” to the festival’s primary day of activity. The Heikinpäivä events are back on the streets of Hancock every January. Enjoy them!
