Summer Youth Fishing Tournament

HOUGHTON - The first Keweenaw Youth Angling Classic is underway. BHK Child Development Board is sponsoring the summer-long tournament designed to introduce youth ages 3 through 15 to the sport of fishing and to involve adults in the lives of youngsters.
The event, similar to the Keweenaw Angling Classic for adults, is open to young anglers in the three counties BHK Child Development serves: Houghton, Keweenaw and Baraga.
"It's an opportunity for kids of that age range to have fun and get back to nature," said Mark Cavis, a coordinator of the event. "It doesn't have to be expensive. The free fishing weekend is another reason for parents and kids to get together."
This weekend, anglers do not need a license to fish in Michigan waters. The free fishing weekend is an annual event sponsored by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
The summer youth angling classic features an "I Beat Buster" prize for any participant who catches a walleye heavier than the heaviest walleye caught this summer by local walleye enthusiast Charles "Buster" Roberts, a BHK employee and event coordinator and will be entered into drawing to win $50 in cash.
Participants must register by purchasing a $3 Keweenaw Youth Angling Classic button and picking up a set of rules from one of the following retailers: Baraga County - Indian Country Sports, Pat's Food, Baraga Marina, BHK L'Anse Center; Houghton - Calumet Holiday, General Story, Hancock Citgo, Harter's Party Store, Hearth Deli, Krupp's, Lake Linden Quality Hardware, Lake Linden Cenex, Twin Lakes Convenience, BHK Houghton Center, BHK Centennial Center; Keweenaw County - Lac LaBelle Lodge and Phoenix Store.
Contestants may enter as many fish as they want in any of the categories. Official weigh-in stations include: Pat's L'Anse IGA, Hearth Deli in Chassell, Fesitval Foods in Houghton, Louie's Super II Foods in Calumet, Pat's Foods in Calumet and Hancock, GasLite General Storey and Lac LaBelle Lodge.
Entries must be submitted to BHK within 10 days of making the catch or by noon on August 22, whichever comes first.
The contest runs June 11th through August 22. Winners from two age divisions - 3-7 and 8-15 - will be eligible to win prizes of case or merchandise for the largest northern pike, walleye, perch, crappie/bluegill, brook trout/rainbow trout, and salmon/lake trout.
The Daily Mining Gazette and the L'Anse Sentinel will publish a scoreboard of leaders throughout the summer, featuring the angler's name, age, fish category and weight.
Contestants are encouraged to submit photographs of themselves and their catches to firstname.lastname@example.org for potential publication.
