Schoolcraft
Township
Schoolcraft Township was once the site of the largest copper milling operation in North America. Today the Houghton County Historical Museum sits in the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company Mill Office. In the beginning, Schoolcraft Township boomed with lumbering and Calumet and Hecla mining interests. Joseph Gregoire, a lumbering tycoon, only employed men from Quebec to work at his logging camps, which partly explains the early heavy French-Canadian presence in the township. As the years went on, the area became more diversified and surnames from all regions of the world were represented in the small community. Today, the majority of people from the area still claim French-Canadian ancestry.
