News as reported by the Ontonagon Herald in their 2004 year end report.
The Ontonagon Township Board has long supported the Township's Public Library, which observed its centennial celebration in 2004. The Township can no longer afford the $20,000 annual support for one of the most outstanding community libraries in the Upper Peninsula. The condition of the roads in the Township had reached the state of needing major upgrading. It was finally decided to place both issues on the ballot in August... one mill for roads for 19 years, and 1/2 mill for the Library, and both issues passed. Township roads will be improved and paved over several years, and the Library is assured of regular financial support to continue its service to the community.
This was also a year of observing the 100th anniversary of the founding of the community Green, named after lumber baron Thornton Green. Though somewhat difficult to define, Green lies on or near the township boundary between Ontonagon and Carp Lake Townships, and exists in both. The Green community exhibits quite some spirit, however, with many of the descendants of the founders still residing in the area.
